Looking back at 2020, it was clearly a year of extreme disruption, partial adaptation and survival.
In Q1 2020, markets around the world reacted violently to the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, the VIX reached a record high of 82.69 on March 16, surpassing the previous peak of 80.74, elsewhere ongoing regulation and rule changes affected derivatives market, but on the alternatives side, venture capital and private equity exits revived towards the end of the year.
As we consider our prospects for the future, there is certainly reason for concern, with persistent unemployment rates, rising national debt, and a virus that is not yet defeated. However, 2020 has demonstrated that there is also reason for hope in the form of human adaptability, technological innovation, and market resilience. In finance, we are keenly aware of the global landscape, the interconnections between sectors and economies, and the value of intelligent policy responses, clear communications, and international coordination. Through a combination of awareness, cooperation, and action, we will meet this challenge together.
